About the Weather

What is the difference between climate and weather?

Weather refers to what happens in the atmosphere at a specific place and time. A weather forecast might include measurable quantities like temperature, humidity, and the likelihood of storms.

When these weather quantities are averaged over a period of many years, then we have the climate. Climates are studied on much larger time scales, and over a wider area, compared with weather, which usually is short-term and on a smaller scale.

Was that last big typhoon really caused by climate change?

No. Although climate change might lead to more frequent, more intense storms, we cannot attribute any single weather event to climate change. Climate is something measured over a long period of many years. On the other hand, weather is measured over a few days at most.
